Oral Steroids — How They Work and When to Use Them

Oral anabolic steroids are 17-alpha alkylated (17-aa) — a chemical modification at the 17th carbon position that allows the compound to survive liver first-pass metabolism and reach systemic circulation. This modification is responsible for both their oral bioavailability and their hepatotoxicity. All 17-aa oral steroids require liver monitoring during use and are limited to maximum cycle durations of 4–8 weeks depending on the compound.

Oral steroids serve two primary roles in cycle planning. As a kickstart — a fast-acting oral in the first 4 weeks while a long-ester injectable builds to stable blood levels. As a finisher — added in the last 4–6 weeks of a cycle to harden physique, drive strength and improve definition before the end of the cycle. Oral Steroids by Goal

Bulking — Mass and Strength

Dianabol (Methandrostenolone) is the most widely used oral bulking steroid. Rapid mass and strength gains in the first 3–4 weeks — primarily from aromatisation-driven water retention and direct anabolism. Standard dose: 30–50 mg/day for 4–6 weeks as a kickstart. Requires aromatase inhibitor for estrogen management.

Anadrol (Oxymetholone) — the most powerful oral mass builder available. 50–100 mg/day for 4–6 weeks maximum. Exceptional strength and mass gains but very high hepatotoxicity and estrogenic activity. Mandatory liver support.

Lean Mass and Recomposition

Turinabol (Chlorodehydromethyltestosterone) — the "dry Dbol." Slower, leaner gains without significant water retention. 40–60 mg/day for 6 weeks. Moderate hepatotoxicity. Lower suppression than Dianabol. Quality keepable gains.

Superdrol (Methyldrostanolone) — extremely potent dry oral. Exceptional strength and lean mass gains with no aromatisation. 10–20 mg/day for 3–4 weeks maximum. Very high hepatotoxicity — one of the most liver-toxic oral AAS available. Mandatory liver support.

Cutting — Lean, Hard and Dry

Anavar (Oxandrolone) — the most widely used cutting oral. No aromatisation, low androgenicity, mild hepatotoxicity relative to other orals. 40–80 mg/day for 6–8 weeks. Used by both men and women. Excellent strength preservation during caloric deficit and hardening effect on physique.

Winstrol (Stanozolol) — dry hardening finisher. No aromatisation, significant strength increase, joint dryness is the main side effect. 25–50 mg/day for 4–6 weeks. High hepatotoxicity — liver monitoring required. Also available as injectable Winstrol.

Strength and Advanced Use

Halotestin (Fluoxymesterone) — the most androgenic oral available. Used almost exclusively for strength and aggression — not for mass. 10–20 mg/day for 2–4 weeks maximum. Extreme hepatotoxicity and androgenicity. Advanced users only.

Oral Steroids and PCT

All oral steroids suppress natural testosterone. PCT is required after every oral steroid cycle — without exception. Nolvadex 40/40/20/20 mg for 4 weeks is the standard protocol after short oral cycles.
